Description
The Blue Ridge Parkway is very close to my home; I can even use it as a shortcut. And what a shortcut of beauty it is. In moments you can be taken from dense city traffic into the forested, narrow road. The city sounds disappear as the dappled sun bathes the trees with light and startling contrasts.
I came across this gorgeous, tiered and multi-step/staircase falls and just had to pull over. This series of waterfalls, one after another of roughly the same size, each had its own sunken plunge pool. Using raw canvas and pigment, I wanted to capture the stunning transition of dark to light. There were rhododendrons and ferns all over, happy to be near the water and humidity. The way the paint is able to spread allowed for the soft mist emanating from the water as it trickled down.
It's paintings like these that serve as memories of enveloping peace and calm.
